What is a step sibling?

A step sibling is a person who is the child of one's step parent but who is not biologically related to oneself. They become a sibling through the remarriage of a parent after a divorce or death. Step siblings have different biological parents and they may or may not have grown up together. They may share a common living environment or may see each other only occasionally. While step siblings are not biologically related, they may develop similar, close bonds to those of biological siblings. The relationship between step siblings can be complicated by a variety of factors, including family dynamics, age differences, and previous relationships with biological parents or other siblings. However, many step siblings can form strong and supportive relationships, and in many cases, they can be closer than biological siblings.
